It was six-thirty that evening when I pulled into the parking lot of my apartment building. I was wiped out, and not just from lack of sleep; two hours in front of Chief Johnston will do that to you. Governor Randolph did indeed make good on his threat and called the chief. During my session in the chief’s office, however, I got the distinct impression that the call had not gone all the Governor’s way; Chief Johnston managed to get him to admit that he had, indeed, called Clemont Rhodes.

I thought long and hard about that meeting with the Chief and let me tell you, it was intense. No, I’m not going to go into detail… I can’t. I promised myself I’d forget it, put it behind me, and that’s what I’ve done. Let’s just say that the old tyrant gave me a hard time for what he called “stepping over the line” during my interview with the former governor, and then assured me of his unwavering support, so long as I kept him in the loop, and leave it at that. So yes, when I pulled into that parking lot that Tuesday evening, all I wanted to do was take a shower, grab a bottle of red, and hide my sorry ass.

I found a half a bottle of Cabernet gathering dust on the kitchen counter and three slices of two-day-old pizza in the fridge.

“That will have to do it,” I muttered to Sadie Mae as I scratched her behind the ears.

I didn’t want to think about work for the next eight hours. Sadie Mae certainly didn’t want to hear about my day, I was sure, so I showered, warmed the pizza in the microwave, poured the entire half bottle of wine into a pint mug, and we settled down on the couch. I ate pizza and drank wine; Sadie Mae just ate pizza.

I turned on the TV, flipped through a hundred offerings on Netflix before deciding to binge watch Alias. I love Jennifer Garner; she kinda reminds me of me… Hah, don’t I just wish? The series was kind of out there, more fantasy than reality, but it captured our attention enough that Sadie Mae and I nestled together under a blanket for the next four hours. It was just what I needed, to escape from the rigors of life and the job. It was wonderful. She really does remind me of me!

I’d dumped my gun, badge, and phone on the coffee table in front of the couch next to the pizza and mug of wine. I wanted reminders of work out of my sight, but I also wanted them close at hand: force of habit. Police work is like a freakin’ drug. Once you have a taste of it, you’re hooked for life, and you can never fully let it go. You can slip away for a couple hours, fall into a deep sleep in front of the TV; no bad dreams, no mutilated women, no mangled bodies
